Air rotation units are typically designed to separate airflow and help control odors. That’s pretty much it! But how good are they really at “cleaning” the air? What Is An Air Rotation Unit?

An air rotation unit (also known as “air purifier”) is a device that separates the flow of air using fans and filters. Most air rotation units use rotating wheels inside the cabinet that move air throughout the room. The air then passes over charcoal filters before being released back into the room.

How Do They Work?

You might think that the purpose of these units is to filter out particles in the air. In reality, however, while filtering out microscopic particles, air rotation units are not effective at removing airborne contaminants. Instead, they function primarily to reduce odors.

Air purifiers work by moving air across the surface of activated carbon (charcoal). Activated Carbon absorbs gases and fumes, making them easier to eliminate. The air rotation unit consists of a fan connected to a motor inside a sealed chamber. The unit is designed to keep the humidity levels in the enclosed area below 70% and the temperature above 22 degrees Celsius. Air circulation can be achieved either passively (without using electricity) or actively (using electrical power). In order to achieve passive circulation, the motor keeps running at a constant speed even after the electricity supply is switched off. Electricity-based units have two speeds; slow continuous rotation and fast intermittent rotation. Slow continuous rotation provides low ventilation rates while fast intermittent rotation provides high ventilation rates. There are many variables that determine how much air should be moved per hour, including the size of the space, its shape, and the type of materials being stored in the room. The airflow rate may need adjustment during operation based on changes to these parameters.

 The components of the ARU can vary depending on what type of system is being used, however the most basic components are a fan, ducting, fans, filters, and a controller.

Functionality

 The ARU creates airflow throughout the warehouse by drawing in outside ambient air through the inlet ducts and then pushing the heated and filtered air back out towards the outlets. The ARUs use fans to push the air throughout the warehouse and the controllers allow users to adjust the amount of airflow, speed, and direction.

Design Considerations

 ARUs can be designed in various sizes and shapes. Depending on the size and shape of your warehouse and the layout of your equipment, the location of your ARU may be determined. In general, the larger the warehouse and/or the greater the number of pieces of equipment inside of the warehouse, the closer the ARU should be located to the center of the building. If the warehouse is small, less space is needed around the ARU, so an ARU could be placed at the perimeter of the warehouse.

Installation and Maintenance

 Depending on how well-designed and installed your ARU is, installation and maintenance may be minimal or extensive. Most systems require little to no maintenance and some manufacturers claim that their products don’t need to be cleaned.

Safety

 As with any piece of equipment, the safety of the ARU is paramount. As mentioned earlier, not only does the user have to keep them clean, they should make sure that the system is properly vented before operating them. Ventilation is always recommended before using an ARU in order to avoid potential inhalation hazards.

Warranty

 Similar to any other piece of equipment, warranties are often dependent on the manufacturer. However, most manufacturers offer at least a 1 year warranty on their units.
