Human Comfort - Importance of Human Comfort in HVAC

Importance of Human Comfort in HVAC

In this post we are going to see about Human comfort. What is the importance of Human Comfort in HVAC. According to ASHRAE (American Standards for Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers), Human Comfort is that condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment. Thermal Comfort alludes to the emotional sensation of temperature in a climate. Ideal degrees of Thermal Comfort helps in expanding efficiency. Temperature, mugginess, immaculateness and movement of air are the significant variables which influence the human solace. The framework which successfully controls these circumstances to deliver the ideal outcomes upon the tenants of room is known as an "Cooling System".

What is the secret to human comfort in air conditioning?

It’s not what you may think! There are many things that contribute to human comfort in air conditioners, but the one thing that stands out above others is the compressor. You can have the best insulation and windows in the world, but if your compressor is not working efficiently, then it doesn't matter how comfortable the environment is inside.

1. Humidity:

Humidity has been shown to have a significant impact on indoor air quality (IAQ). A humid environment encourages mold and bacteria growth, while increasing energy consumption. Having too much moisture inside your home can lead to condensation, which increases humidity levels indoors. This will cause mold growth, mildew and other harmful microbes to flourish indoors. It can also cause issues with ACs and refrigerators.

2. Temperature:

Temperature plays a major role in regulating human comfort. Humans are not designed to live at extremely low temperatures, and high temperatures can have a negative effect on our health. In order for humans to comfortably survive without any discomfort, we need to maintain a comfortable temperature range of 70°F - 80°F. If the temperature fluctuates outside this range, then it could potentially cause sicknesses and even death.

3. Carbon Dioxide Levels :

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is colorless, odorless gas that is produced naturally during respiration. According to some scientists, elevated CO2 levels can also contribute to climate change. As the amount of carbon dioxide rises, the level of oxygen in the atmosphere decreases. Due to this phenomenon, the average global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has increased from 280 parts per million (ppm) in 1958 to over 400 ppm now.

In comfort air conditioning, air is brought to required dry bulb temperature and relative humidity for human health comfort and deficiency. On the off chance that adequate information on required conditions isn't accessible, then dry bulb temperature is accepted as 21 °C and relative humidity as half (50 percent). The reasonable hotness factor is for the most part kept as follows:

For Residence or Private Office = 0.9

                    For Restaurant = 0.8

For Auditorium or Theater = 0.7

For Dance Hall or Gym = 0.6

Next we will see some of the inside environment data for comfort condition.

                    Effective Temperature = 22 to 24 °C

                    Humidity = 30 to 60%

Quality and Quantity of Air = 400 cfm in 1 TR

Noise Level = 35 dB to 40 dB

Moisture Content of Air = Depends on Dry bulb temperature

These data may vary if type of building is to be changed. Now we will see some definitions of terms related to Human comfort.

Dry Bulb Temperature : It's a normal temperature of inside and outside air, generally we can measure by a thermometer.

Wet Bulb Temperature : It's a water vapor temperature which is present outside or inside of air. If we wrap a wet cloth on thermometer wick, it will denote the air wet bulb temperature.

Humidity : Humidity is defined as the amount of wetness of water vapor in the air.

Air Quality : The air in inside space should at all times be free from toxic, dust, bacteria, fumes such as carbon-di-oxide.

Commotion (Noise) : Air clamor make more unsettling influence in involved region for solace condition. There are four conditions which affect Human Comfort. They are :

Temperature, Humidity, Air Purity and Air Movements.

An AC controls the above factors for us to accomplish human solace. Most People (90%) are comfortable when the air temperature is 18 to 22 °C and the relative humidity is between 40 to 65% .

Next we will see some equipments used for checking air parameters.

Thermometer : It is used to determine Dry Bulb and Wet Bulb Temperatures.

Hygrometer : It is used to check the Humidity.

Anemometer : This device is used to check the air quantity or used to check how much cfm of air.

Db Meter : This device is used to check the noise level.
