Full Fire Fighting & Fire Protection Course - (Part 24)

In this part of Full Fire Fighting series, we will learn about Fire Fighting Pumps and accessories.

Fire Fighting Pumps and accessories

Firepump

A fire pump is a device that pushes water into your hose system. They were originally invented in the early 1900's, and have been around for over 100 years. There are three types of fire pumps - pressure, air-powered, and electric. A fire pump is extremely important to any good cannabis cultivation setup, especially if you're using any kind of drip irrigation system.

Hose Clamps

Hose clamps are great for protecting your hose from getting damaged, and keeping your water supply safe from animals and children. You can find these at many home improvement stores.

Flow Meter

Flow meters measure how much water comes out of your nozzle. If your flow meter is broken, you'll probably notice a decrease in the amount of water coming out of your handpiece.

Sprinkler Heads

Sprinkler heads come in various sizes and shapes to fit different handpieces, and some even have adjustable settings. So keep a few sprinklers around your garden to make sure everything gets watered!

Fire fighting pumps

Pumps are designed specifically to move water from one place to another. These devices are essential tools in firefighting. They are often used to put out fires before they spread. The two types of fire fighting pumps include submersible pumps and surface mounted pumps. Submersible pumps are commonly used in underground structures, while surface mounted pumps are those that are placed above ground and are connected to water mains. There are many different kinds of surface mounted pumps, including diaphragm, piston, centrifugal, and jetted. Jetting is the most effective type of pump.

Water sprinklers

These devices direct streams of water onto a specific target area, usually to extinguish or prevent fires. Sprinkler systems can come in any size and shape and are generally used inside buildings. Different types of sprinklers include flood-type sprinklers, spray-type sprinklers, and foggers. Flood-type sprinklers use pressure to discharge water and have no moving parts. Spray-type sprinklers use suction to discharge water and have rotating arms that rotate at high speeds. Foggers use air pressure to discharge water.

Fire extinguishers

All electrical equipment should be equipped with fire extinguisher system. Most houses have some type of fire extinguisher system. You'll find them at home improvement stores, hardware stores and even online. These systems use water or carbon dioxide (CO2) to put out fires. Carbon dioxide works best in small amounts because it's odorless, colorless and non-toxic. Water extinguishers work well for small fires. Make sure the extinguisher systems are tested regularly and don't forget to replace the caps when they're empty.

Sprinklers

A sprinkler system is an effective way to keep people and property safe from potential flooding caused by accidental breaking of pipes. Sprinkler heads can be mounted on top of roofs or installed under floors. Sprinkler systems protect buildings from possible damage due to water leakage. Sprinklers not only help prevent damages by providing necessary rainfall but they also save money on insurance premium.

 Smoke alarms

Smoke detectors are devices that sense smoke and sound an alarm to let you know about the danger. They detect the presence of smoke and send an alert signal to notify someone. Smoke alarms are useful for homes and commercial establishments alike. Besides being helpful in saving lives, they also provide peace of mind by letting you know if something is wrong in your house. If you think you need one, consult with your local building authority and get them fitted.

 Gas cut off valves

Gas cut off valve is a device that stops the flow of gas from supply line in case of leakages. When there is a leak in a pipe, gas flows in the direction of least resistance. Leaks can occur anytime, especially during construction. To avoid accidents like explosion or burning, install these safety valves to shut down the gas flow.

Fire fighting pumps

These types of fire fighting pumps are not only for use in fire sprinkler systems, they are used in many water applications including watering gardens, pools, spas, fish ponds, and other aquatic environments. There are two basic types of these fire fighting pumps, single disc and double disc. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. In general, if you want something that can handle high pressure then go with a double disc pump. If you have low pressure requirements and need something small and compact then go with a single disc pump. A single disc pump does not have a rotating impeller, instead it simply relies on the user’s arm power. These pumps are generally smaller than double disc pumps and do not produce as much pressure. To operate a double disc pump you must apply force to the shaft in order to rotate it. The force applied to the shaft must exceed the friction force between the impellers which causes them to turn. The higher the revolutions per minute (RPM) the greater the amount of pressure produced. Double disc pumps can easily reach 40 RPM and produce over 10 psi. On the other hand, single disc pumps can get up to 30 RPM, but they do not produce nearly as high of pressures.

 Fire hose connector

This particular fire hose connector is designed to connect two different lengths of hose together. When connecting two fire hose ends together, the coupler should have a male fitting on one end and a female fitting on the other. The male fitting fits inside the female fitting and is held firmly in place with a locking mechanism. Once inserted correctly the hoses are locked in place, making it impossible for air to enter the connection.

Fire Hydrant Couplers

These couplers help to protect the integrity of the hose connections between a water supply and hydrants. To install a fire hydrant coupler, you must first remove the rubber gasket that covers the hole in the top of the hydrant. Then, slide the metal collar of the fire hydrant coupler onto the outer surface of the rubber gasket covering the hole. Tighten the cap screws until they lock tight. Now you can attach any size hose to either side of the hydrant.

 Fire Hose Connectors

A fire hose connector is essentially a coupling device used to join two sections of hose together. The purpose of this device is to prevent air from entering the system and causing a backflow. The hose connectors work by clamping the hose and preventing both sides from moving relative to each other. The hose connects at the bottom of the connector where the ferrule attaches to the hose, and the ferrule is attached to the hose connector body.

 Firefighting Pumps

Firefighting pumps use water pressure in order to fight fires, extinguish flames, and put out gas leaks. Many firefighters rely upon these pumps for their safety once they arrive at the scene of the fire. These pumps are designed to operate under extreme conditions, including high temperatures and high pressures. Firefighting pumps come in many different sizes and configurations depending on their intended purpose, size, and weight.

Water Hose Ladders

Water hose ladders consist of a series of interconnected lengths of hose connected together with couplings, valves, and fittings. They allow firefighters to reach higher distances than would otherwise be possible without using ladders.

Handheld Sprayers

Handheld sprays are small devices that spray liquids directly onto surfaces to combat a fire. This sprayer is often used by civilians who want to protect themselves or their property against fire hazards.

Foam Guns

Foam guns are designed to shoot foam-based fire suppressants onto the surface of a fire. Using special nozzles, foam guns distribute foam over the entire area of the fire and provide protection until professional fire fighters arrive.

 Self Containment Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

Self containment breathing apparatus consists of a mask, helmet, and air tank. Inside the tank is pressurized oxygen coupled with a filter that removes particulate matter from the air before entering the user’s lungs. In addition to providing an effective method for combating fire, SCBAs offer a degree of protection during certain types of rescue operations.

Smoke Generators

Smoke generators produce smoke by burning materials inside the generator while producing a low level of humidity. This type of equipment is used to simulate the effects of actual forest fires.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are mandatory equipment for any home and business. These devices are used to put out fires and prevent them from spreading. When purchasing these items, make sure they meet NFPA requirements. Most extinguishers have a rated use time based on the type of material being used to put out the fire. For example, some types of fire extinguishers may only last fifteen minutes before they need to be replaced.

Breathing Apparatus

The second thing you should always keep in mind in case of emergency is breathing apparatus. If you’re working around hazardous materials, it’s imperative that you wear proper gear at all times. Make sure that you know how to properly don and use proper safety equipment. Proper firefighting gear includes self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA), which provide oxygen while filtering toxic gases.

Sprinkler Systems

Sprinklers are a necessary equipment for both commercial and residential buildings. Water sprinklers help reduce damage caused by fire by preventing the spread of flames and smoke. There are two basic types of sprinklers; wet pipe and dry pipe systems. Wet pipe systems work best if you are dealing with combustibles such as wood, paper, and plastic. Dry pipe systems are good for those who deal with flammable liquids like gasoline, kerosene, oil, and alcohol.

 Flashlights

Flashlights are a great way to stay safe in any situation. In addition to their typical uses of finding objects and saving lives, flashlights can be used to signal rescue crews to find you once the fire department arrives. You can purchase flashlight from any store or online retailer.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms are a lifesaver in any situation. These devices save lives by going off when smoke is detected inside a building. Smoke alarms can detect carbon monoxide, which is not readily visible, and will go off even when the air quality is normal. Keep them where everyone can easily access them, including in bedrooms and bathrooms.

Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors are another piece of safety equipment that should be kept in every home. A detector alerts people to the presence of smoke in a room and sounds an alarm to let you know that something is wrong. Smoke detectors also measure the amount of smoke present in your home and alert you accordingly.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Carbon monoxide is produced when burning fuel, especially natural gas and propane. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and invisible to the naked eye. It kills approximately 2,300 lives per year. Many homes do not have sufficient ventilation to remove enough CO to avoid dangerous levels of exposure. Always check your local codes regarding the installation of CO detectors and ensure that they are installed correctly.

Carbon Dioxide Generating Systems

Carbon dioxide generating systems combine two chemicals to create carbon dioxide gas. One chemical reacts with the other to produce CO2, which then escapes into the atmosphere. Once generated, the gas can be stored for later release.

Firefighting Pumps

Firefighting pumps work by putting out fires by forcing water onto them. There are two types of firefighting pumps, high pressure and low pressure. High-pressure pumps have a higher volume of flow than low-pressure pumps. Low-pressure pumps are used when there isn't enough water supply for a high-pressure pump to be effective. The amount of water supplied by these pumps varies depending on the size of the nozzle. Most firefighting pumps use either diesel engines or electric motors.

Nozzles

Nozzle sizes vary based on their application. A larger nozzle provides a wider spray area, while smaller nozzles are more focused. Larger nozzles are good for spraying flames, whereas small nozzles are better suited for extinguishing smoldering fires.

Sprinkler Heads

Sprinklers heads are connected directly to a firefighting pump and distribute water throughout a room. Each head features a different type of valve, which controls the flow of water from the pump. Many sprinklers feature adjustable settings for varying amounts of time. Most models include a timer, which makes it easier to control the rate at which water is released.

Hose Kits

Hose kits are often provided with firefighting equipment. These provide a convenient way to connect hoses together. Hose kits allow firefighters to set up hose lines without having to worry about how long they need to extend each line.
