Plumbing full course part 21

In this part we will learn about Floor drains in Plumbing...

What are floor drains?

It's pretty simple - they're pipes that drain water away from the foundation of a building. Floor drains are installed in any area where excess water could damage the structure. Because floor drains need some type of drainage pipe, they are often installed underground.

When do I install floor drains?

You should install floor drains whenever you have a crawl space and/or basement that's prone to flooding. If you already have a leaky roof, you'll want to take care of that first before installing floor drains.

How much does it cost to install floor drains?

Depending on the size of the project, floor drains can range anywhere from $200 to $2,000 per linear foot. You may not even need to hire a professional if you're doing it yourself.

What does a floor drain do?

A floor drain is basically a hole in your floor that collects any water that gets on the ground. Floors are generally sealed with asphalt or concrete, and if they're not properly sealed, then water can leak in. This isn't good for you if you have pets who need access to water, but otherwise, having a floor drain system installed would prevent your floors from getting damaged.

How should I install a floor drain?

You'll want to use a professional plumber to put in a floor drain. Make sure you understand how the drain works before hiring them though. You don't want to accidentally damage something on your own!

Do I need to buy a separate fixture to install a floor drain? If yes, what fixtures can I choose from?

A floor drain comes with its own fixture. You won't need anything else.

Floor drains are often overlooked in the construction phase because they don't seem to play much of a role in house architecture. However, floor drains actually have a major purpose; they help prevent water damage in bathrooms and kitchens. They also collect sedimentary particles and debris from the bathroom's wastewater system and filter them out before they enter the sewer line. If not properly maintained, floor drains could cause sewage backup and flooding in your home, which can lead to serious structural damage and health risks.

A floor drain is a pipe that extends down from the ceiling and empties its contents onto the ground. Floor drains are commonly used for various purposes including drainage systems, fire-fighting equipment, and waste disposal.

How do I know if my house has a floor drain?

If you notice any pipes coming out of your roof or wall, these may be floor drains. You should check your floor drains or crawl spaces for leaks regularly. If the drain does not appear to be functioning properly, it may need to be repaired.

Are floor drains safe?

Yes, floor drains are completely safe. In fact, they are often times safer than traditional toilets due to their placement and design.

Floor drains in plumbing

The floor drain in plumbing refers to a pipe that runs directly underneath the sink or bathtub. When water flows down these pipes, they carry away any excess water from the sink/bathtub, preventing overflows. In some cases, the floor drain may not be equipped with a plug, causing overflow problems. If you have experienced this problem, call a plumber immediately. A plumber can easily repair the issue without having to dig deep inside the pipes.

Types of floor drains

There are three types of floor drains that are commonly used. There is the straight type, the drop-in type, and the pop-up type. Here we will discuss each type individually.

Straight Type

This type of floor drain includes a single hole at the bottom. If you need to install a floor drain in your bathroom or kitchen area, then the straight type would work best. However, if you want to use this style of floor drain in your laundry room, the installation could pose a problem. As mentioned before, a toilet or shower can block the flow of water, thus not allowing the pipes to drain properly.

Drop-In Type

With this type of floor drain, the pipes are placed on top of the floor. The advantage of using this type is the ease of installing them. The disadvantage is that while placing the pipes over the floor, the opening may become blocked over time. Also, the surface beneath the floor might get wet causing mold and mildew.

Pop-Up Type

Also called the quick connect floor drain, this type of floor drain comes with two holes on either side. One hole goes over the existing drain and the other connects to the drainpipe. You can only set this type of floor drain in sinks and tubs where the back of its base is flush with the wall. Installing this type of floor drain requires minimal effort as it comes with preinstalled bolts. However, you still need to cut off the old drain first.

A floor drain is a pipe that serves the purpose of carrying water away from a building that is being constructed. A typical floor drain consists of a cast iron casing with a number of holes placed in its bottom. These holes allow water to flow out of the pipe into the ground below. There are two types of floor drains, vertical and horizontal. The type of floor drain you need depends upon the size of the building you are constructing.

Horizontal floor drain

For a small building, vertical floor drains are sufficient. However, if you want a bigger floor drain, then a horizontal floor drain is ideal. In a horizontal floor drain, the hole is placed at an angle and the pipe runs parallel to the foundation wall. You can use these drain pipes over many years without having any issues.

Vertical floor drain

This kind of floor drain has been around for centuries. They are best suited for larger structures where they should not be placed above 6 feet. There is no issue using them throughout the duration of construction. Most vertical floor drains have a flange underneath them so that the drain can attach to the concrete foundation. If the structure is built well enough, the drain should stay in place and not move.
